Chevrolet Impala 4 dr Sedan 283 cui V8 — 1960

Original in the truest sense of the word. A substantial family car of its era on the other side of the Atlantic. In the modest, middle-class Sweden of the time, this model was driven by taxi operators and company directors, while the working class travelled by bicycle or in small European cars.

"This Impala forms part of our living automotive heritage. From a historical and ethnographic perspective, this car is more important to the historical record than an identical example that has been fully restored. Its history and the passage of time remain clearly visible, and it can be compared to a well-aged wine.

Fortunately, neither the previous nor the current owner has given in to the temptation to restore it. It now stands here like a surviving mirage, waiting for its next owner.

Inspected and approved by the Swedish vehicle inspection authority on 8 June 2026 and ready to drive.

Please note: As the car has been standing unused for an extended period, we recommend carrying out a full service before any longer journeys, including replacing all fluids, ignition components, the fan belt and other relevant service items."

Beschreibung

The Impala was purchased new on 28 February 1960 by Mr William Fisher of Grand Island, Nebraska. The accompanying documentation shows that the car was sold by the GM dealership Clayton Peterson Motor Company. It was manufactured at General Motors’ assembly plant in Janesville, Wisconsin.

In 1978, ownership passed to Mr Greg D. Walker of Lincoln, Nebraska. The exact date is unknown, but the car later found its way to California. In 2009, it was offered for sale through an online auction. A Swedish car enthusiast from Säffle in Värmland placed a bid and purchased the car. The seller stated that it had previously belonged to an elderly relative.

Before the car was exported from the United States, the oil was changed and new tyres were fitted at the buyer’s request. The current owner, who imported the car in 2009, drove it under its own power from the port of Gothenburg to Säffle. Due to a lack of time, it was then stored in a heated garage until 2011, when it underwent its Swedish registration inspection. A remark concerning the brake hoses meant that the car was once again put into storage, as the owner never developed a true passion for American classic cars.

In the spring of 2026, the owner realised that the Impala deserved to be passed on to a genuine enthusiast. He therefore had the brakes recommissioned, with new rear wheel cylinders, new brake hoses all round and the replacement of one brake pipe. The car was inspected and approved on 8 June 2026. Under current Swedish regulations for historic vehicles, it is now exempt from further periodic inspections.

The owner is now offering the car for sale through Bilweb Auctions. Included with the car are the owner’s manual, a copy of the American title document, notes relating to its first owners, a spare wheel and a jack.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Equipped with its original-type 283 cu in small-block V8 engine and a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. During the test drive, the car was brought fully up to operating temperature, and it was also left idling for an extended period during the photography session. No signs of engine overheating were observed.

The car retains its original-style DC generator, which, in a characteristically period-correct manner, caused the charging warning light to illuminate when the engine was idling at very low speed. We cannot confirm with certainty whether the engine is the exact unit fitted when the car left the factory, but it is of the correct type and still retains many of the original components that are commonly removed or lost over the years.

For example, the heat shields between the ram’s-horn exhaust manifolds and the spark plugs remain in place. The heat riser tube from the right-hand exhaust manifold to the carburettor is still fitted, as is the fan shroud between the cooling fan and radiator. The DC generator, often one of the first components to be replaced with a modern alternator, is also still present.

The car drove very smoothly and steadily on the road, with no significant vibrations or unusual noises. It is equipped with power steering, which received new hoses in 2026. While driving on a newly resurfaced, low-noise country road, a faint transmission noise could be heard at certain speeds. This was not considered abnormal and remains within what can reasonably be expected from a 66-year-old Chevrolet Impala.

The tyres were fitted new in the United States in 2009.

The car is also equipped with an aftermarket air-conditioning system, most likely installed during the 1960s or 1970s. The system appears complete and untouched, with the compressor, condenser and all hoses still in place, and it should be possible to return it to working order.

  • Zustand Interieur

An exceptionally well-preserved interior. The padded dashboard is free from cracks and deformation. The only notable wear can be found on the fabric trim around the driver’s door opening and on the driver’s door armrest. The headlining has a few moisture stains.

The carpet is in very good condition. When the additional rubber mat is lifted, some slight sun fading can be seen in the fabric carpet upon close inspection.

We cannot guarantee that the entire interior is completely original from 1960, as the seat upholstery may have been replaced considering its remarkably good condition. If so, considerable effort has clearly been made to reproduce the correct pattern and materials.

  • Zustand Exterieur

We have inspected the car to the best of our ability, and everything suggests that the paintwork dates from the 1960s and is most likely original. There are some dull areas on the roof that may respond to careful polishing.

The body sides are straight and present well, with good panel fit around the doors, bonnet and boot lid. There is a repaired crease in the bright trim on the right front wing, although it is not particularly noticeable. There is also a small indentation in the bright trim along the front edge of the bonnet.

Otherwise, the paintwork shows the normal signs of age, including scratches, small stone chips and the occasional rust spot. Assuming the paint is indeed original, the car has survived the years remarkably well.

The bumpers show normal wear. The rear hubcaps have a few small rust spots in the chrome. The underside, insofar as it could be inspected without placing the car on a lift, displays the level of surface rust normally expected on an American car that has never received any additional rustproofing treatment.

Please study all photographs carefully for further information.

  • Zustand gesamt

A fascinating, unmolested original car. No one has applied touch-up paint or attempted to conceal anything. An ideal car for the discerning Chevrolet enthusiast.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

Following the bold and radical styling of the 1959 model, Chevrolet chose to tone down the design somewhat for 1960. Buyers could choose between economical six-cylinder engines and more powerful V8 alternatives.

The most common engine option was the classic 283 cu in (4.6-litre) Turbo-Fire V8. For those seeking even greater performance, Chevrolet also offered the larger 348 cu in (5.7-litre) Turbo-Thrust big-block V8 as an optional extra.
