"Ideal for someone looking to repair a two-stroke while retaining its patina. Of course, it can also be fully restored for those who prefer. It would also be perfect as a continued museum exhibit."

Beschreibung

Bilweb Auctions has been entrusted with selling the cars from the collection at Saab Memorial Hall, Sweden's most charming little Saab museum. The museum was founded by Norwegian Tron Bach, who moved to Sweden in 2011. After a busy career as a hotel owner, Tron relocated to a small farm in Gullsjö, Vännäs. When he discovered a worn and dented Saab 92 behind a shed, the idea began to take shape. He decided to start a Saab museum to honor Saab's Swedish cultural heritage—a car admired worldwide. Over the years the museum has been open, more than 1,000 visitors have come to this small Northern Swedish village to see the Saab museum. Tron feels that, with age, it is time to close his museum on a high note.

The museum will close around the time of the auction. Until then, we recommend a visit. For more information, visit Saab Memorial Hall.

At this auction, there are several cars we have not been able to remove from the premises. To do so, one of the walls must be demolished. This will be done at the closure so buyers can collect their cars.

About the Car:

This Saab 96 was purchased new in 1962 by carpenter Alf Esphammar, who lived in Karlskoga. The car was assigned registration number T65315 by the Örebro County Board. According to reports, the car has had 7 previous owners, all residing in the Örebro area. Saab Memorial Hall acquired the car in 2017. Upon acquisition, the car was started and test-driven by the well-known Saab enthusiast and former rally champion Ture Karlsson. Ture has been a chief mechanic for the museum. The car was cleaned, and newly refurbished wheels with new tires were installed. The Saab was then driven into the museum under its own power. The car was last inspected by the Swedish vehicle inspection agency in 1981 and has been off the road since then. It requires welding skills for those who wish to repair the car. See the pictures.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Three-cylinder two-stroke engine with a rated output of 38 hp. Last driven in 2017, when it was taken for a spin in the local area before being driven into the museum under its own power. The car lacks brakes and was not started during the photography session. The fuel system needs to be drained and cleaned before attempting to start. Missing start battery.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Original interior from 1962 with minor wear and some signs of aging. Overall, the interior has held up well. No holes in the upholstery. The headliner is in excellent condition. See the pictures.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Good fenders all around. Refurbished wheels and new tires with narrow white sidewalls were installed in 2017. There are rust damages in the inner fenders in the engine compartment, as well as a hole in the inner fender of the trunk. There are older metal repairs around the upper spring mounts at the back, which seem to have held up well. Rust along the bottom edges of the floor pan and at the bottom of the doors. Please examine the pictures carefully.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A charming restoration project in a condition that many seek. Patinated without being ruined.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

The Saab 96 was introduced on February 17, 1960. It was an evolution of the Saab 93. The Saab 96 was produced until January 1980. Over the years, Saab continuously improved the car step by step. The Saab 96 became one of the most common and beloved cars in Swedish households. The car received many nicknames over the years, including "Djungeltrumma" (Jungle Drum), "Ägghalva" (Egg Half), and "Trollhättemoped" (Trollhättan Moped). The Saab 96's handling impressed as a rally car. In 1962, Erik Carlsson "on the roof" won one of the world's most prestigious car rallies, the Monte Carlo Rally. He did it with a Saab 96 equipped with a 55-horsepower two-stroke engine. He repeated his feat the following year, winning the 1963 edition of the rally as well.
