"Skillfully restored "Mini" that runs perfectly and makes a great impression both inside and out."

Beschreibung

Sven-Eric Kjell was a well-known and highly skilled mechanic who ran a reputable car workshop in Nässjö. He purchased this Austin Cooper in 2004, at which point it was in need of restoration. The car was completely disassembled and restored — the body was stripped down to bare metal, painted in sections, and then reassembled. The engine, drivetrain, and brakes were all refurbished, and many new parts were purchased. Once the restoration was completed, he drove the car only sparingly.

Sadly, he passed away in 2024, and his widow has now chosen to sell the car to an enthusiast who will preserve its excellent condition.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car is in perfect working order and has been fully restored. Since it hasn't been driven for a while, a basic check-up of the brakes might be needed.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Very nicely reupholstered interior that has seen very little use since the restoration.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Professionally repainted about 20 years ago, but driven very little since and still in excellent condition. Features nice chrome, as well as great tires and wheels. The car is also fitted with an aftermarket sunroof — perfect for enjoying warm summer days.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A fun enthusiast car to enjoy this summer.

Fakten zum Modell

They were produced under the BMC umbrella with the names Austin and Morris, along with the luxury versions Wolseley and Riley. This was referred to as “badge engineering,” since in most cases, only the badges and grilles were changed. The first “Hundkoja” — or Mini, as it was known in the rest of the world — was introduced in 1959. It was revolutionary thanks to its clever and space-saving design, developed by Alec Issigonis. His vision was to create a simple and affordable car with excellent handling characteristics — and that’s exactly what it became.

One person who truly appreciated the Mini was John Cooper, who at the time was running a Formula 1 racing team. He was already using BMC engines in his race cars and knew their potential. An idea was born. John Cooper approached Alec Issigonis with the suggestion of creating a sportier Mini with a more powerful engine. Issigonis, however, was not interested — he saw the Mini as a people’s car, not a racing machine.

But in 1961, John Cooper eventually got his way. A larger 997cc (57 hp) version of the original 850cc (37 hp) engine was developed, and the new Mini Cooper was born. It featured a different interior trim and disc brakes, as well as a contrasting roof color. In 1963, a more powerful version was introduced in a limited run — the Cooper S 1071cc, which also came with larger and stronger disc brakes.

In 1964, a lot happened. Three new engine variants were introduced: the Cooper S 1275cc and 970cc, as well as a more street-friendly 998cc engine for the standard Cooper. The reason for developing so many different engine sizes was the various racing class divisions, which were based on engine displacement. There were categories for cars up to 850cc, 1000cc, 1150cc, and 1300cc — meaning there was a Mini to fit every class.
