Beschreibung

This Saab was purchased new by a man in 1969 and has been in the same family ever since. The car was not used extensively by the family and did not cover long distances. The current owner, who is the granddaughter of the first owner, took over the car in 1988 and has not used it extensively. The car was taken out of service in 1989 and has been stored in a garage since then. The Saab appears to have been partially repainted at some point, but the owner is not aware of any details, although some runs and paint on the trim can be seen in some places, as shown in the pictures. The car has not been started and needs an inspection of both the engine and braking system, in other words, a thorough startup service and general inspection. There is rust in the lower part of the doors where the seams have swollen, as shown in the pictures. The car comes with four old studded winter tires, four nice hubcaps, a center console with a radio, and a box with some parts, as shown in the pictures.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car did not start due to long-term storage since 1989. The engine has not been checked. The Saab needs a thorough startup service as well as a general inspection of, among other things, the braking system. The door lock is sticking on the passenger door.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The fabric on the upper part of the rear seat is sun-faded and torn. Otherwise, the upholstery is in good condition as seat covers have been used on the front seats and rear seat. The headliner appears intact but is slightly dirty.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car appears to have been partially repainted. The paint is worn, with some runs and visible touch-ups. There is rust on the lower edges of the doors. The body has several small dents. Nice hubcaps are included separately.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A lighter restoration project that provides the opportunity to own and use a classic Saab. Low mileage and only two owners.

Fakten zum Modell

Compared to its predecessor, the Saab 96 had a larger and more powerful engine, a new rear section with a larger rear window, a new instrument panel, a more spacious luggage compartment, and a roomier rear seat, making the car five-seater. In 1965, a "facelift" occurred, giving the car a more modern front. They also chose to extend the front to accommodate a larger engine.

A 1.2-liter inline-four cylinder engine began development, but Saab had the opportunity to use the V4 engine from Ford, which was also found in the Taunus. The V4 engine was introduced for the 1967 model year, allowing continued sales after a sales crisis due to the outdated two-stroke engine. However, the two-stroke engine remained available as an option until 1968 when it was completely replaced by the V4 engine. An inheritance from the two-stroke engine was that all 96s had freewheeling. This feature was introduced to protect the two-stroke engines from damage due to engine braking. If the engine continues to rotate without fuel supply, it does not receive sufficient lubrication because the oil is mixed in the gasoline. With the V4 engine, the reason for using freewheeling was gone, but many drivers appreciated the ability to shift gears without having to depress the clutch pedal.

In addition to the basic model, a more luxurious and sportier version was also produced, primarily intended for export: Granturismo 750 (1960-61), Sport (1962-1965), and Monte Carlo 850 (1964-1968).
