"It has the right presence in every way—that’s what makes it. User-friendly, enjoyable to drive, and well worth preserving."

Beschreibung

It was delivered to its first owner, Gösta Wallenberg in Uppsala, by Philipssons Bil AB in the same city in June 1964. Mr. Wallenberg, a property owner, used his 220 for more than 39 years. Eventually, he moved to Helsingborg—perhaps after retiring—where the final service entries in the service book were recorded.

The current owner’s father, Assar Nilsson, and Gösta Wallenberg would occasionally meet at car gatherings in the Helsingborg area. Before that—and before Assar’s interest in cars fully developed—he had been a dedicated and committed manager at Lantmännen in Kågeröd, near the Ring Knutstorp race circuit. An eye condition forced him into early retirement, and after an intense working life, he had to find new meaning in his unexpected free time.

Assar had always spent a lot of time with one of his daughters in the paddocks at the race circuit, and his passion for cars was now able to flourish fully. He often asked Gösta if he could buy the Mercedes, and in 2003, Gösta finally felt the time was right.

Assar took great care of the car and kept detailed driving records over the years. His wife Karin was listed as the owner for just under a year before the current owner—their daughter—took over the car in 2018.

The most recent inspection, and the last required under current regulations, was carried out on May 15, 2019, at 70,521 km. Since then, the car has covered just over 780 km.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The engine, with its twin carburetors, starts reasonably easily but is sensitive to proper choke use before reaching operating temperature. Once warmed up, the smooth straight-six sound adds a familiar sense of calm to the driving experience. The clutch and gearbox work well together, and the body exhibits that gentle side-to-side motion typical of larger cars from this era. New dampers and springs could help tighten up the ride somewhat.

  • Zustand Interieur

Pepita-pattern original upholstery in charming, untouched condition, having been protected by seat covers for many years. The covers have now been fully removed, and photos are available from before and after. The wood trim on the dashboard is in good condition, with the correct grain and a nicely aged appearance.

The headliner, door panels, and original rubber mats further enhance the pleasant and authentic original feel. The only detail that stands out is a small auxiliary temperature gauge—the original gauge failed, and Assar opted for a simple and cost-effective replacement from Biltema. Restoring the original gauge to working order should be a straightforward task for someone familiar with such repairs.

  • Zustand Exterieur

By all accounts, a well-preserved and nicely patinated original paint finish with some minor touch-ups. Good chrome, a solid undercarriage, the attractive S-model hubcaps, and new Nexen tires in the original dimensions.

The first registration plates from the then-new system introduced in 1973, the practical and once-mandatory mudflaps (often removed due to mounting issues and frequent inspection remarks), and the small round auxiliary reflectors all contribute to a genuine sense of untouched Swedish history. The final analog road tax receipt from 1972 also remains in place by the driver’s footwell.

  • Zustand gesamt

This is how you want to find them—well cared for and unspoiled, with few owners and a reasonable mileage of just over 171,000 km. The odometer has rolled over once, and according to the documentation, this likely occurred in July 1976. A used and nicely maintained large Mercedes, without excess or embellishment.

Fakten zum Modell

The W111—known in Sweden as the “fintail Mercedes,” in English as the “fintail,” and in its original German as Heckflosse—was Mercedes’ large luxury model of the 1960s and in many ways laid the foundation for what would become the S-Class (Sonderklasse).

The W111 was introduced in August 1959 in three versions with different equipment levels and tuning of the then well-known 2.2-liter straight-six engine: the 220b (like this auction car) and 220Sb with different carburetor setups, as well as the 220SEb with fuel injection.

The model had a relatively short lifecycle, as its tailfins—styled with inspiration from the 1950s and intended to appeal to the American market—quickly fell out of fashion during the 1960s. Its successor, the W108, was introduced as early as 1965, although the W111 continued for a few more years as the 230S, an entry-level version of the S-Class. The exclusive coupé and cabriolet models based on the W111 platform remained in production until 1971.
