Beschreibung

This car has a Swedish history and was first registered here on June 2, 1965. According to available information, it has had five owners, with the third owning it for over 27 years (1980–2007). It was off the road between 1986 and 2014. The car was repainted around 2007.

The current owner acquired it in February 2014, at which point it was started up and inspected again. Since then, it has been used as an enthusiast’s vehicle and has virtually never been driven in the rain. Always garage-kept. The mileage is believed to be accurate but cannot be guaranteed.

The cylinder head has been modified with new springs and valves for unleaded fuel. It features a new alternator, spin-on oil filter, electric fan, and an electric SU fuel pump. Most of the wiring has been replaced along with new relays. It has an electronic ignition, a new water pump, and newer carpets. The exhaust system is stainless steel.

Included with the car are a tonneau cover, owner's manual, various literature and receipts. Double keys for the steering lock and ignition lock. The key for locking the doors and the trunk is missing.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts easily and runs smoothly and steadily, with a lively and responsive engine under acceleration. During a test drive through a residential area and on country roads, everything appeared to function well—including steering, handling, clutch, gearbox, overdrive, and brakes.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but what could be seen underneath and in the wheel arches appeared to be in good condition. Equipped with a stainless steel exhaust system.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Complete and well-preserved interior in original specification. Seats retain good firmness, carpets are in nice condition, and the wood trim shows a tasteful patina from use. Steering wheel, controls, gauges, and dashboard are all in fine condition.

The amp gauge has been disconnected due to the installation of a modern alternator replacing the old dynamo. The horn was not functioning at the time of inspection but should be an easy fix. The heat distribution switch is broken.

The soft top and tonneau cover are in good condition. Fire extinguisher included.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Glossy and well-kept paintwork. Chrome, trim, emblems, rubber seals, and lighting details are all in good condition considering the car’s age and mileage. There is a small drilled hole in the rear bumper on the driver’s side, likely from the installation of a reversing light.

Nice chrome wheels fitted with period-correct, newer tires. Both engine bay and trunk are clean and in good condition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Once the Harris Tweed cap is in place, the engine growls to life, and the clutch is released, a special feeling takes over. The version with IRS was considered the top of the line in the TR4 series. In this fine condition, it’s a truly delightful classic and enthusiast’s car.

Fakten zum Modell

Triumph’s history dates back to 1885, when the company began selling bicycles. In the early 1900s, they expanded into motorcycles, and by 1921, they had started producing cars as well. Due to financial difficulties, the motorcycle division was sold off in 1936, and just before the outbreak of World War II, the company went bankrupt. During the war, in the autumn of 1944, the Standard Motor Company acquired Triumph’s assets.

In 1946, the new Triumph 1800/2000 models were introduced—available as both Sedan and Roadster. You might recognize the Roadster from the British TV series Bergerac, set on the island of Jersey. The model was essentially based on the Standard 14 hp.

In the early 1950s, the company decided to use the name Standard for sedans and family cars, and Triumph for models with sportier ambitions. The TR series was launched with the TR2—slightly illogically named, as the “1” was a prototype developed by Ken Richardson. The TR2 was one of many small British sports cars that emerged after WWII, offering strong performance combined with low fuel consumption. Launched in late 1953, it was produced until October 1955. With 90 hp, it could go from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 11 seconds and reach a top speed of 170 km/h. It became a popular competition car, winning the 1954 RAC Rally among other events.

In October 1955, the TR3 followed, featuring a revised, wider grille. Power was increased to 95 hp with SU carburetors, and with a different cylinder head, up to 100 hp. In 1956, the TR3 became the first British production car to feature front disc brakes. In 1957, the updated TR3A arrived with changes to the body, grille, bumpers, and exterior door handles. It too saw motorsport success and was especially popular in the U.S., where demand for cheeky little English sports cars was booming. When the TR4 was ready, a TR3B was briefly sold alongside it in the U.S. to ease the transition.

The TR4 was introduced for the 1961 model year and produced in its base version until 1965. Much of the mechanicals remained the same as its predecessors, but it now featured a completely new body, designed by Giovanni Michelotti—Italian styling was very much in vogue at the time.

In early 1965, the chassis and rear suspension were revised to feature independent rear suspension, improving ride comfort and handling. This version became known as the TR4A IRS (Independent Rear Suspension). Not everyone welcomed the change—some in the U.S. market felt it made the car too expensive, while purists thought it softened the ride too much. As a result, Triumph continued to produce the TR4A without IRS in parallel, mainly for the American market.

The successors, the TR5 and TR6, were powered by six-cylinder engines—but that’s another story.
