Chrysler New Yorker Spitfire Straight 8 5.3 — 1947

A magnificent representative of Chrysler's post-war models. Sold new in Sweden as a luxury car from the United States of America during that time and with a history so remarkable that it almost deserves to be told in a short documentary.

"A grand car with an engine and exterior appearance that sets it apart from the rest, but it's the provenance that truly sets this car apart. Swedish sold cars from the 40's with an interesting and well documented history do have a special place in many Swedish enthusiast's hearts."

Beschreibung

In November 1947, AB Gense in Eskilstuna, Sweden's oldest active limited company, took delivery of a powerful and luxurious Chrysler New Yorker. As an executive car for the company, it was surely a appreciated, spacious, and exclusive driving experience for those who had the honor of riding in it. The company used the car until 1955 when it was sold to the Ström family in Stockholm. It is Elisabeth and Rune Ström who brings the adventurous element to the story of this car. They had something so unusual at the time, a home - and a restaurant (!) - in Benidorm, Spain. At that time, the town was not much more than an unknown fishing village. The Chrysler was driven several times back and forth to Spain through post war Europe and well into the sixties. More stories can be told about these exciting trips, but these will have to wait. The mayor of Benidorm often complained that the car was registered in Sweden and eventually, the large New Yorker was parked in the middle of the sixties at Elisabeth Ström's parents' home in Bäckebo, outside Nybro. It was garaged under a tarpaulin until the mid-eighties. Unregistered and unusable, the car changed owners a couple of times until the Chrysler savior Kristian bought the car with a handshake in 1987. Three years later in 1990, he had made the car presentable and roadworthy again and had it re-registered. In the early nineties, Kristian also managed to get in touch with the aforementioned Elisabeth Ström (the second actual owner) and they corresponded through letters for fifteen years until her passing. In these letters, there are many fun and interesting stories about the car and about life on the side. But as I said, they will have to be told another time. The car was originally dark blue, but after the body restoration of the eighties, Kristian chose to paint it in a (eighties trendy, one might think) cream-white color. The car was enthusiast-used for almost thirty years and over 15 000 km's.. There were exhibitions, meetings, family trips, and excursions, cheerful customer meetings, and pick-ups at stations and airports. And - of course - hundreds of weddings and other festive occasions that require a charming and exclusive American big Chrysler from 1947.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

A flathead inline eight cylinder engine with an equally cool design and a unique name, Spitfire Straight 8. The semi-automatic three-speed gearbox works well once you get the hang of it, and the engine's special sound has a wonderful charm. There is a small fuel leak, probably from the fuel pump, and a new one is included, but it could also just be a hose connection.

  • Zustand Interieur:

After being stored by a previous owner for a while, the interior is in need of some attention. It has been partially started with some cuts made on the existing upholstery and door panels to identify the original material.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car has been repainted in white from its original dark blue over 30 years ago. The paint is still in good condition, but after being stored outside for a presumed longer period, there are small signs of surface rust in the doors and joints. There is a small paint damage at the edge of the rear hatch and some blisters. An extra front bumper is included.

  • Zustand gesamt:

It is a substantial piece to handle both in traffic and at home, and the car requires good and dry storage like any other vintage vehicle. Today, it is still in a representative and good basic condition, and with a little effort both inside and out, it can become even better. Given all the history, knowledge, and documentation available, this is an awe inspiring journey to undertake if you are interested in embracing the car's entire history and carrying it forward. With some vehicles, there is simply a cultural and historical responsibility that comes with them.

Fakten zum Modell

When production resumed after World War II in 1946, the New Yorker version became the most luxurious equipment package from the brand's Series C-39. The 1946 to 1948 models have the same basic appearance with the typical grille, based on the body introduced with the 1941 model year. Chrysler offered the New Yorker as a luxury car to compete with, for example, the Cadillac Series 61, Buick Roadmaster, and Packard Super Clipper.
