Ford Lotus Cortina Mk II — 1968

Swedish-sold and well-renovated TC with a good history. A long period of inactivity from the mid-seventies to the early nineties, followed by some time in a museum, makes the odometer reading of just over 90,000 kilometers highly likely. The first owner must have been a driving enthusiast, as the majority of these kilometers were driven during the car's first seven active years.

Beschreibung

The car was delivered to its first owner in April 1968. It's likely that Rolf from Hallstahammar, who later moved to Örnsköldsvik, was the owner when the new computerized car registry was introduced in 1972. He sold the Cortina, which was deregistered in 1973, and it passed through Skutskär, Gävle, Älvkarleby, and Västerås. The car was nearly dropped from the registry in 1987 when the Vehicle Registry noticed it had been deregistered since the mid-1970s. It was quickly sold, secured in the registry, and a skilled car body worker in Västerås took over, doing a fine job with the little that needed attention and repainting it in a red Volvo color.

In 1989, Bosse Warmenius bought the car; he is well-known in historic racing and was actively competing with a Lotus Cortina Mk 1 at the time. Warmenius restored the car, painting it in the original color scheme but in the white version with a green stripe. The engine, after requiring spare parts, served in his race car, and in 1990 he built the engine that is currently in the car. After being displayed at places like the Lagan Car Museum for many years, and despite the car having driven only a few hundred kilometers, Warmenius undertook an engine overhaul a few years ago, during which he replaced the water pump, a known trouble spot located in a hard-to-reach spot at the front of the engine. A representative from the English Lotus Cortina Register has certified and thoroughly inspected the car, as documented in an important certificate. The current owner purchased the car a year ago, having owned a Cortina GT in his youth, and he wanted to once again experience and possess the finest in the Cortina series.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine and transmission feel lively, robust, and classically suited for highway racing. The clutch and brakes are also in good condition. The engine has been renovated and upgraded; it is not the original engine, meaning there are no matching numbers. Here are the builder's specifications:

"L-block, bored and fitted with forged high-compression pistons. All bearings are of race quality (lead-bronze). The crankshaft is hardened, straightened, and balanced along with the flywheel and race clutch. High-pressure oil pump and a baffled oil pan that retains oil during hard cornering. The cylinder head is ported and equipped with larger valves, stiffer valve springs, and L2 cams. The engine has a modern geared starter motor (original included) and an electric fuel pump."

During the test drive, a slight jingling noise was heard from the inside of the right rear rim, unclear what it was caused by, but the owner intends to check and address it.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior has an untouched and patinated feel to it and is original except for the carpets, which are of a newer style. All Lotus TC instruments are in nice condition, complemented by a pleasantly thin and finely patinated original steering wheel. An unmounted period-appropriate sport/race seat in partial leather is also included.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

During the body restoration, the car was painted in the classic white with green decoration instead of the original Dragoon Red. The paint is beautiful and fine, and the chrome is nicely untouched in places. It features Minilite-type wheels with new Moxxis tires. A set of original steel wheels is also included.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Many things are correct in a road-ready and slightly upgraded condition. The feel on the road, a period-specific driving pleasure, and a clear mechanical Lotus history give the car its exclusivity.
