"A white minimalist Mexico-produced Beetle in exemplary condition is, in its simplicity, an exceptionally strong retro bubble."

Description

It was imported from Germany to Sweden in 1996 and was essentially a new car at the time. In Germany, there was organized import of Mexico-produced Beetles, and bringing one to Sweden was a relatively straightforward process back then. The current owner purchased it from the importing owner in 2012. The car has never been driven in the rain at all and is in showroom condition despite having a total mileage of just over 4,100 miles. The comment the owner often receives is "How nice, how old is it?" followed by genuine surprise when they find out it's from 1996.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The fuel-injected air-cooled flat-four engine has, of course, details and construction to meet higher emissions requirements, but the sound from it with just a single exhaust pipe is still unmistakably unique in its own way.

  • Interior condition:

Plain and simple interior, the version it was sold in was an affordable and budget-friendly car in Mexico at that time. Unworn, clean, and neat.

  • Exterior condition:

White original paint with few black details, this version held back on excesses. No extra details, ornamentation, or emblems, and white-painted bumpers.

  • General condition:

A representative and well-maintained example from 1996 of a model that was produced for 65 years and in over 21 million units. This becomes a collector's car that exudes exclusivity despite its simple and understated appearance.

Facts about the model

After the war, Volkswagen production quickly ramped up and spread across the world. The Type 1, commonly known as the Beetle or Bug, gained popularity and was produced in many different countries. As early as 1950, there was an assembly plant in Ireland. Other countries like Brazil, South Africa, and more followed suit. Assembly of the Beetle began in Mexico in 1955, and around 1964, it transitioned to full-fledged factory production instead of being assembled from imported parts in crates.

The production end dates for the Type 1 varied around the world. In Germany, production ceased in 1977, except for the convertible model which continued until 1979. In South Africa, production continued until 1979, and in Brazil, it was discontinued in 1986, only to be resumed from 1993 to 1996. In Mexico, the production lasted until 2003. During the 1990s, the Beetle was modernized to align with the times. Fuel injection, catalytic converters, automatic safety belts, and front disc brakes were among the improvements. From 1995, most chrome details were replaced with black lacquer.
