Description

It was delivered by Ostermans in Stockholm, registered in February 1930, and thus designated as a 1930 model. However, according to American production documentation that identifies the engine number as the serial number, it is a 1928 model. Freys Hyrverk was the first owner in any case. Interesting older documentation largely shows the entire history (image). Furthermore, it was never war-assigned, marked as 'Not suitable for Kronbruk. Brand.' The abbreviation stands for Crown use, where the car with a driver could be summoned. It can be interpreted that a LaSalle was not suitable for crown use due to its brand, and a luxurious large car would probably not be very useful as a readiness vehicle. The titles of some of the owners in the 1940s, however, do not give a great impression of luxury, a painter and a haulier, but the car still has a roll-down separate window between the front seat and back seat rows, suggesting travel with a special driver. And this was also GM's ambition, a slightly elegant but also a bit sportier brand. From the late forties to the late sixties, it was with an owner in Karlstad before ending up in Skellefteå when the founder of Sparreholm collections, Hans Karinen, bought the car already in 1967 for his then Old Car Salon in Skellefteå. Some exciting letters tell some of the history, and an old fuel rationing card with an older tax receipt and a spare key attached to one of the letters is fascinating to study. Furthermore, the quote from Rhodins in Trollhättan in 1989 shows a significant sum for renovating the car, and it is not clear if the exterior work was done there. This information may be updated here. The car has no current registration, but a registration number from S-county (Värmland) and all documentation makes it a trouble-free originality check.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine is started with a separate tank, a bottle, and it is unclear how the fuel pump works. The engine sounds fine, the gearbox works well with the clutch, and the brakes are good. It smokes a bit, and it is reported that a freeze plug might be leaking.

  • Interior condition:

Overall, the interior appears to be original with some work remaining. The fact that much of it is untouched, albeit a bit fragile, is still valuable for a careful restoration of the car's interior. The speedometer seems to have stopped at 90 km/h. The window dividing the cabin is stuck/difficult to move and needs sensitive adjustment and handling for full functionality.

  • Exterior condition:

Beautiful paint, fine chrome, good tires, and an overall neat and tidy exterior. The fit of the doors is good; they close and open easily. One of the hood latches on the right side has lost a bit of its springiness.

  • General condition:

A reasonably easy project for the enthusiast with pre-war car knowledge. Perhaps also for the younger audience where a budding interest in this type of cars can be discerned, especially for a somewhat rarer brand like LaSalle with its stylish and more subdued allure.

Facts about the model

LaSalle was created by GM as a sister brand to Cadillac with style, elegance, smaller size, and inspired by the European roadsters of the time, more specifically Hispano-Suiza. The car was offered in all kinds of body styles, and the body manufacturers Fisher and Fleetwood were responsible for their production. The brand remained in GM's lineup until 1941
