"An exceptionally fine condition - a very good and well-functioning example of a rare model."

Description

This is an early 76A Sports roadster in Corinthian white, which left the factory in October 1961. It was equipped with virtually all available options, such as an AM/FM pushbutton radio, four-way power driver's seat, power windows, SelectAire A/C, external mirrors, electric windshield wipers, tinted windows, and more. This made the car's price almost comparable to that of a Cadillac Eldorado. However, this additional cost was not passed on to the customer because, according to the invoice, it was sold to another division within Ford. The delivery address was Ford Division Garage Southfield/Rotunda. Thus, this car was displayed at the legendary Ford Rotunda during the winter of 1961-62.

The subsequent whereabouts of the car are not well-known, but according to a title from 1997, it was located in California at that time. In 2006, the car came to Sweden, and since 2008, it has mostly had a single owner who used it sparingly. Unfortunately, the owner passed away a few years ago, and since then, relatives have taken care of the car without actually using it much.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car runs smoothly and nicely, and the 390" engine delivers plenty of power. The valve covers are chromed, and all equipment is in working order. The car has recently been serviced and thoroughly inspected. The convertible top is electrically operated and functions properly, although there might be a slight play, so an adjustment and review of the electronics may be necessary. Similarly, there are some interior and engine compartment wiring that should be corrected to improve the cosmetic appearance. The power steering may experience some resistance at full steering wheel turns during test drives due to low oil levels in the system. The car has been sporadically used in the last ten years but has been well-maintained and stored properly.

  • Interior condition:

Everything is in very good condition, with chrome and bright details in excellent shape. The seats have likely been reupholstered at some point in the correct original style. There's an additional older radio installed on the center console, as well as a temperature gauge. Some minor paint wear has occurred on the steering wheel and the tonneau cover's headrest area.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint and chrome are in the best condition, and the flawless Kelsey Hayes wire wheels add to the overall appearance. However, some plastic parts in the emblems have developed minor cracks. The tonneau cover over the backseat is in very good condition, with some slight wear from the convertible top. Speaking of which, the convertible top itself is flawless and appears almost brand new.

  • General condition:

That sounds like an exceptionally fine condition, and the car has an interesting history. Having extensive documentation about this particular car adds to its appeal and collectability.

Facts about the model

Ford Thunderbird was introduced in 1955 as a pure two-seater car. In 1958, it became larger and four-seater, which upset some buyers. So much so that by 1962, Ford offered a two-seater Thunderbird again, known as the "Sports roadster." A fiberglass "tonneau cover" was placed over the backseat. The car could be transformed into a four-seater when needed by removing the tonneau cover.

The Sports roadster model was divided into two groups: 76A, which was a convertible and came with the "sport roadster package," and 76B, listed as the Thunderbird Sports roadster. The current car is a 76A and is part of the series of the first 558 cars made before December 1961, making it an authentic Sports roadster. After December 11, 1961, they were split into 76A and 76B. Only a total of 1427 Sports roadsters were produced for the 1962 model year.
