Volvo P1800 Jensen B18 — 1961

This is a first year model and Swedish sold Jensen P1800 chassis number 646 that has only had a husband and wife owner since new. It is a fantastic opportunity to purchase a classic P1800 at a reasonable price.

Description

This P1800 was delivered new to Kurt from Borås on September 15th, 1961 and remained his pride and joy until his death in the late 1990s, when it was passed on to his widow. The grandchildren used to play in the car as their grandfather worked on it in what can only be characterized as the world's longest renovation; they never saw the car on the road because it had last been inspected/MOT'd in 1978 and is in need of a new one. Kurt's wife acquired the car when he died, then she died a few years ago, so it had been sitting in the same garage for 40 years. The car is operational, but it requires an overhaul of the brake system, electrics, and gearbox mounts, as well as a full assessment, before it is ready for its final inspection/MOT. With this car, you have a lot of options, but I'd go with a rolling renovation that focuses mostly on the mechanical aspect.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Replaced the clutch cylinder and slave cylinder, put new carb injectors, adjusted the valves, oil and filter, and tested the fuel system, among other things, and the car is now running and driving. The brakes and gearbox mounts need to be changed, the exhaust is blowing, and the electrics need to be thoroughly inspected and tested.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is clean and tidy; the seats have been reupholstered and are not in their original design; and all instrumentation, with the exception of a missing radio and a window wider on the passenger side, are original and intact. Some gauges function properly, but all should be reviewed..

  • Exterior condition:

The car was repainted in its original color at some point during the renovation, most likely 30+ years ago. The bodywork is very straight and clean, with no visible rust, and the chrome work is in good shape with slight oxidation and a repair on the rear right bumper (see images). The inside door sill has been fixed; there is no rust, but it is not perfect (see photos).

  • General condition:

A final inspection/MOT will be required, which will include a brake overhaul, an electrical test, and other minor repairs. A good polish and the installation of some trims and a bonnet badge are all that is needed to complete the exterior. It's the ideal vehicle for someone seeking for a decent winter project that won't break the wallet.
