"A nice classic that needs a little work in engine compartments and luggage to get really nice, see condition overall."

Description

The current owner bought this car in 2018, then it had only had 2 owners. The car was in reasonable condition but he decided to make it really nice and repainted it in original color and put in a new interior. The car gives a nice impression and goes fine when you make notes in the engine compartment and luggage so you have a Swedish classic to enjoy for many years.

Facts about the model

Volvo Amazon was launched as a successor to the success of the PV 444 and, in comparison with this, was significantly more modern, not least through its 1950s design (especially inspired by the shared grill from Imperial) with pontoon bodywork and four-door version. The Amazon came in October 1961 in a two-door version and in a five-door version (combi) in February 1962. The man behind the design was Jan Wilsgaard. The safety thinking was high already at that time at Volvo, and the Amazon already had at the premiere fasteners for seat belts as standard equipment. In 1959, as the first series-produced car in the world, Volvo Amazon received three-point seat belt in the front seats as standard equipment, but as early as 1957 the model was prepared for three-point seat belt, which could then be obtained as an optional extra.

The Amazon handbrake lever was mounted to the left of the driver instead of between the seats. The reason is said to be that model versions with full sofa in the front seat and steering wheel-mounted gear lever are planned. However, no such model ever came into production.

During the 1960s, Amazon was Volvo's volume car and a great success in a number of export markets. In 1966, Volvo 140 was launched, but the Amazon continued to be manufactured until 1970. As a more affordable alternative and to compensate for the closure of the PV544 1965, Volvo Amazon Favorite was launched in 1966. The favorite was a simpler and cheaper variant of Amazon and was taken out of production in 1968. During the years of manufacture, a number of modifications were made (among other things, the two-color paint disappeared, the taillights changed, a new design of the luggage lock handles) by the Amazon, but the basic form was maintained during the 14 years that the model was manufactured. A total of 667,323 Amazons were manufactured between October 1956 and July 1970.

In 1956, an Amazon costed SEK 12,600 and had a 1.6 liter / 60 horsepower B16 engine and a three-speed manual transmission. In 1962 a B18A of 1.8 liters / 75 hp was mounted, and in 1969 came an even bigger engine, B20A of 2.0 liters / 90 hp. When the Amazon was taken out of production in the summer of 1970, it cost SEK 17,100 including excise and VAT. The strongest engine was the B20B with 118 hp.

An Amazon is competing against a Saab 96.
The Amazon was the first Volvo car available with right-hand drive.

The name Amazon was only used in the Nordic market because the name was taken abroad by the German motorcycle and moped manufacturer Kreidler. Abroad, the Amazon is instead better known as the Volvo 121 / 122S / 123GT. The name was first spelled Amazon, after the meaning Amazon.
