Facts about the model

The BMW Isetta was a German microcar manufactured by BMW in the years 1955-1962.

The BMW Isetta was launched in 1955 and manufactured under license from Italian ISO who developed the Isetta. In the Isettan sat a 250 cc four-stroke engine of its own manufacture. It was at 12 hp and gave the car a top speed around 85 km / h. In 1956 came a 300 cc engine, with another hp.

In the first few years there was only the four-wheel variant. The rear axle lacked differential, but because the rear wheels sat quite close to each other, it was barely noticeable. The four-wheeler was registered in Sweden as a car, and therefore ended up in a difficult competitive position - few were sold.

Since the three-wheel version was launched in 1959, only this was sold in Sweden, when the customer base became a completely different one, namely older Swedes who bought the Mc card in the 1930s, when few could afford a car. The comfort of a covered motorcycle now attracted when the economy got better, this without the hassle of having to upgrade the driver's license. This customer group had nothing to choose from when all Mc car manufacturers stopped production around 1964, so they only had to keep alive the mc car they had, as long as they dared to drive. Sometimes well into the 1970s-1980s, when the collector interest in these vehicles arose. Hence the much higher degree of conservation of Mc cars in Sweden, compared to four-wheeled micro cars such as Goggomobil from this time.

The model was sold in fairly large numbers and helped to make BMW out of the crisis it was in. At that time, the company had difficulty selling its large wagons.

Isetta was also licensed by other manufacturers, including the UK. Some of these were exported to Sweden.
