"It’s a special feeling to open a pair of garage doors and see the light sweep across a car that has been standing there for half a century. There it sat, in a tight space and not ideally positioned for photography. A story — a dream that was never fulfilled, but which now has the chance to be realized by a new owner. A car, an object, yet with so much presence. It appears to be largely complete, offering an opportunity for its next caretaker to see the project through and bring it back to the road once again. It demands a lot, but it will more than repay the effort."

Beschreibung

According to available information, this car was manufactured in Coventry, with production starting on September 1, 1953. It left the factory on October 14 that same year. The recipient was Auto Compagniet Aarhus in Denmark, to which it was shipped by sea via Grenaa Dampvaeveri A/S, arriving on November 30, 1953. The car was originally finished in Birch Grey with a Red interior trim and a French Grey soft top. The first owner was a Mr. Rosenvinge.

It was later repainted in British Racing Green, and the interior (seats and door panels) was painted black. In the mid-1970s, the car was acquired by a Swedish vehicle enthusiast who already had several British cars in his garage. He contacted the first owner’s son, Jørgen Rosenvinge, and received some documents along with a translated owner’s manual. The car has remained in that garage ever since and is now an intriguing “garage find.”

It was never registered in Sweden, but an origin verification was completed. However, since such verification is time-limited, it will need to be renewed. Around 2000–2001, the engine was rebuilt with new valves in the cylinder head, new crankshaft bearings, new timing chains, new piston rings, and a new exhaust system. The engine was reinstalled, and related components were serviced. Unfortunately, the owner passed away shortly thereafter, and no further work was carried out. Apart from the engine rebuild, the car remains essentially in the same condition as when it arrived in Sweden 50 years ago.

Included with the car are a wealth of documents, such as a Heritage Trust Certificate, customs papers from the Danish National Archives (Rigsarkivet), certification and photos from MHRF used for the origin verification, and a decision from the Swedish Transport Agency confirming that the verification was approved. Consequently, registering the car in Sweden should not pose any problems.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Engine rebuilt just over 25 years ago; otherwise a restoration project, though it appears to be complete.

  • Zustand Interieur:

It appears to be complete and in original condition, apart from the repainting of the seats.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

It appears to be complete, except for the rear bumper overriders. The paint and chrome are in usable, storage-aged condition, showing dents and scratches. There is also rust present, including underneath on the floor pan. The soft top is original but dry. Lighting components are in good condition, as are the glass, emblems, and other details.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A car that has been resting in a Sleeping Beauty slumber for over 50 years, now waiting for its prince and a kiss. There is work to be done, but the car’s fascinating Scandinavian history, together with the model’s legendary background, gives it a mythical aura — and we all know what a historically significant and truly classic car this is.

Fakten zum Modell

The Jaguar XK is a sports car produced between 1948 and 1960, designed by William Lyons. Jaguar had developed a modern six-cylinder engine with twin overhead camshafts, intended for the company’s new large postwar saloon, the Mk VII. The engine was ready, but the rest of the car was not yet complete. William Lyons therefore created a sports car with futuristic lines and installed the new engine in it. Interestingly, the car’s design bore some resemblance to the special Peugeot Darl’mat models that had competed at Le Mans and other venues in the late 1930s.

The new sports car was unveiled at the 1948 London Motor Show, where it drew well-deserved attention — both for its engine and performance, as well as its distinctive bodywork. It was an instant sensation, and Jaguar immediately began production of the car, which was named the XK 120. The first version was a roadster, the Open Two Seater (OTS). From 1951, a fixed-head coupé (FHC) was offered, and later, in 1953, a more refined convertible version joined the range: the Drop Head Coupé (DHC). Unlike the roadster, it featured a sturdier and more substantial windscreen frame for the two front windows, wind-up side windows with higher door lines, and wooden trim in the doors and dashboard. It was also slightly roomier, with the front seats positioned further back from the steering wheel, and it had a more luxurious, padded soft top.

The name XK 120 came simply from its top speed — 120 mph, or 193 km/h — making it the world’s fastest production car at the time. Various special-bodied versions even exceeded 200 km/h. In total, 12,045 XK 120s were built between 1948 and 1954, of which 1,472 were left-hand-drive Drop Head Coupés. Later came the XK 140 and XK 150 — but that is another story.
